Rolling Stone ha publicado una nueva versión de su lista de los 500 mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos, y lo más destacado es que ya no está dominado por hombres blancos que tocaban rock.
La lista de 2003 (que tuvo una pequeña actualización en 2012) tenía solo tres álbumes de mujeres entre los 50 primeros, y el primero de ellos, «Blue», de Joni Mitchell, recién aparecía en el número 30. Mientras tanto, cinco álbumes de los Beatles figuraban entre los 14 primeros.
La lista de 2003 contabilizó solo 12 álbumes de artistas negros y ninguno de mujeres negras. También hubo un solo álbum de hip-hop entre los 50 primeros, «It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back» de Public Enemy, que ocupaba el puesto 48.
La lista actualizada de 2020 es mucho más diversa. «What’s Goin On» de Marvin Gaye, que ocupaba el puesto 6 en la lista de 2003, ahora reina como el número uno. «Blue» de Joni Mitchell ha subido del puesto 30 al número 3, «Songs in the Key of Life» de Stevie Wonder se ubica en el Nº 4, y «The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill» de Lauryn Hill cierra el Top 10.
«Thriller» de Michael Jackson se ubica en el Nº 12, seguido por «I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You» de Aretha Frankin. Cerrando el top 20 hay un trío de álbumes de hip-hop: «It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back» de Public Enemy, «My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy» de Kanye West y «To Pimp A Butterfly» de Kendrick Lamar.
En total, el Top 50 actualizado de Rolling Stone presenta siete álbumes de mujeres (nueve si se cuentan Fleetwood Mac y The Velvet Underground & Nico), y 24 álbumes de artistas negros (aunque solo tres de mujeres negras).
En la totalidad del Top 500, Rolling Stone indica que hay 154 discos que no estaban en la lista original, 86 de las cuales son álbumes del siglo XXI, y tres veces más álbumes de hip-hop que los presentes en el listado de 2003.
La nueva lista se elaboró a partir de las votaciones de 300 músicos, productores, periodistas y ejecutivos musicales. Los votantes incluyeron a Beyoncé (cuya disco «Lemonade» se ubicó en el puesto 32), Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Morrissey, Brittany Howard (de Alabama Shakes), Adam Horovitz (de Beastie Boys), Kevin Shields (de My Bloody Valentine) y John Darnielle (de The Mountain Goats), entre otros.
